Community-Sponsored Green Questionnaire
for 2011 Ventura City Council Candidates

Candidate Questionnaire Responses

VCCool along with input and support from many local businesses and organizations has put together a Green Questionnaire for this year's City Council Candidates. These questions represent concerns and values of thousands of Venturans.

The candidates that we choose for our city council will have extensive impact on how "green" and "cool" our community is. We think this is a powerful educational tool. Share this link with everyone, and VOTE!

Groups who submitted these questions are:
VCCool, Laborers Union Local 585 , Gold Coast Solar, Citizens for Hillside Preservation , Surfrider Foundation Ventura Chapter, SOAR, C4 Green Building Council , Ventura Bicycle Union, Ventura County Civic Alliance

Special thanks to all the candidates running, who are putting in an incredible amount of time and energy into this race!

Organized by Question OR by Candidate!

8 Questions

1. from VCCool
In 2007, the Ventura City Council adopted the Green Initiative. The 2007 Green Initiative does not yet contain a city-wide Climate Action Plan, which could include both greenhouse gas emission reduction and climate change adaptation measures.

Would you pursue the development of a city-wide Climate Action Plan? If so, what would it entail?

2. from Laborers Union- 585
The Southern California Laborers Union has an accredited Green Building training program. Once our apprentices are trained they need local green jobs. What is your plan to keep people employed in renewable green jobs?

from Gold Coast Solar
Are green jobs important to Ventura’s future and, if so, how can the city support local companies in creating these jobs?

3. from Ventura Citizens for Hillside Preservation
What role could the City play in meeting the following General Plan policies?
-Policy 9.01 “Provide adequate land resources to meet the outdoor recreation needs of the present and future residents in the region and to promote tourism in the region.”
-Policy 9.02 “Increase accessibility to open space lands for outdoor recreation.”
4. from Surfrider Foundation
Ventura Chapter

What is your position on a local ordinance to limit the distribution of single-use plastic bags?

5. from SOAR
What are your thoughts on the local SOAR policy, and would you support reinstating it?

6. from C4 Green Building Council
Ventura, regretfully, has not been known within the development or business community to want to encourage future development done within a reasonable controlled growth context.

Do you think that incentives to developers in which they would be encouraged to build more sustainable projects (i.e. projects that were above the standard of the current CalGreen Building codes) and in return be given incentives (i.e. potentially reduced fees, fast track processing, density bonuses, etc.) would be a good idea ?

7. from Ventura Bicycle Union
To accommodate Ventura’s projected growth and traffic congestion with our auto-based transportation system , the City Council will have to commit considerable resources to increase traffic capacity and parking.

Since 40% of all trips are 2 miles or less* which takes 10 to 15 minutes by bicycle, would you be willing to budget more funds for improvements for bicycle riding as a means to save money on infrastructure, enhance safety, lower pollution, and conserve energy?

*2001 National Household Travel survey

8. from Ventura County Civic Alliance
How would you keep the balance between the environment, the economy, and social equity in Ventura?
