4th of July - Energy Independence on Oak Street

This 4th of July, the Sierra Club and the City of Ventura will be blocking off Oak Street in Downtown Ventura, to celebrate a new kind of freedom - freedom from Petroleum. Of course some types of transportation are greener than others - like skateboarding! But they'll all be there: veggie oil, bicycles, electric cars, and many other booths.

Brian Brennan, and Special Guest - Ed Begley Jr. will be speaking. VCCool will be there with free "Low Carbon Diet" workbooks (for lowering Your carbon footprint), and information about the September Bike Summit/Film Fest/and Kids Bike Rodeo. So, human-power yourself to Oak Street this 4th of July, and join the fun.

VCCool and Friends Bring 730 Signatures to Representatives

In June, we collected 730 signatures during Step-it-Up 2007, to ell Congress to lower carbon emissions 80% by 2050.

Once signatures are collected- the important thing is to get those voices heard! And we did. We had lengthy talks with both US Representative Capps and Gallegly. Read about it in the VCReporter !

Tree Rangers: A Successful First Training Session

The Tree Rangers is a city based urban forestry volunteer program focusing on improving the health and size of Ventura’s urban forest.

On Saturday June 2, the first meeting for the Ventura Tree Rangers kicked off. There were 12 local participants and 3 public works staff members on hand for the first of 3 educational classes. After the classes, the group will do a hands-on project.

For information on upcoming Tree Ranger programs, please contact Nathan Slack , the Tree Coordinator for the City of Ventura, or phone (805)652-4541.

Less Beef a Day, Helps Keep Climate Change Away

Back in the 70's, I remember the first time my mom served whole wheat noodles with peanuts, and a three-pound loaf of home-made soy bread. Our kitchen was never the same again - and it's all because of the little paperback cookbook called, "Diet for a Small Planet."

The book had great recipes and a little chart showing that an acre of farmland yields 16 times more food if folks eat the grain and soy directly, than if they ate a cow fed on grain and soy.

This same concept is coming round again as we look for ways to cut carbon emissions and increase the acres of forested land. Here is one of numerous articles about global warming and the way we eat.

Boot the Water Bottle

"Approximately 1.5 million barrels of oil—enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year—are used to make plastic water bottles, while transporting these bottles burns thousands more gallons of oil. In addition, the burning of oil and other fossil fuels (which are also used to generate the energy that powers the manufacturing process) emits global warming pollution into the atmosphere. "
