Ventura, CA 93001

If you've taken time to really calculate your carbon footprint, you probably discovered that transportation is your biggest ticket item when it comes to carbon emissions. The road to cleaner mobility relies on individual lifestyle changes, as well as on changes in civic policy, budget, and planning.

Learn more about alternatives to the automobile, by attending the City of Ventura's excellent speaker series. This month, author, former Portland Oregon Commissioner, and national expert on Livable Communities, Charlie Hales will discuss public transportation systems, and options for Ventura’s public transit.

Last month, Dan Burden spoke on Walkable Communities , pointing out many intriguing ideas to make Ventura more ped-friendly.

Help Kids "Get into Bikes"

VCCool needs you, and so do the local kids. We're gearing up for the mother of kids' bike rodeos, and we need everyone's help. We need cyclists, artists, repair people, Spanish/English interpreters, folks to staff the booth, you name it. Please get involved, call us today so we know you're "in." We'll be doing bike safety, free helmets, repair, and more.

This year, the kids' bike rodeo will be in conjunction with Ventura Unified School District's Summer Fest. It will be on Saturday, May 31st, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If you can help out in any way - please call
(805)648-1267 or e-mail action@vccool.org. Don't be shy. If you're not sure what you want to do, we'll find something. Help get kids out of the car and onto a bicycle!

Youth in Action

Kids want their voices heard - in town halls and in state capitols. Climate Change is a core concern to the younger generation, and they are becoming part of the action, part of the change that is needed.

Watch Alec Loorz, founder of the Ventura group Kids-vs-Global-Warming, as he says it in his own words.

VCCool Helps Faith Group start State-Wide Low Carbon Diet Challenge

Why is it so easy to worry over global warming, yet so hard to use a clothes line, take the train, and bring our own take-home box to a restaurant? VCCool has been sponsoring the Low Carbon Diet campaign for close to a year now, and we're trying to figure that out. We feel that it may have more to do with need for strong community support than with any cost or inconvenience.

So VCCool has teamed up with the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of California, to help them kick off their state-wide campaign for congregants to go on the Low Carbon Diet. The Goal? UU's are trying to loose one million pounds of carbon emissions by Earth Day 2009. Already "Carbon Rings" comprising over 100 families have signed up. If the commitment of UU communities can inspire people make needed lifestyle changes, possibly this same program could be brought to other communities of faith. To learn more about the UU Low Carbon Challenge, visit their website.
