What is the "Ventura HUB" Bicycle Collective?

We're putting together a bike collective that offers tools and training for affordable, do-it-yourself bicycle repair for everyone, as well as education for safe city cycling. People bring their bicycle to the Open Shop to use our stands and tools, and have access to trained mechanics at the ready. Radically different from a conventional shop, people will learn the skills and feel the empowerment of repairing their own bicycle. The Open Shop capitalizes on the skills of a professional master-mechanic to train and supervise volunteers who gain valuable skills in exchange for the commitment of volunteer hours.

First Phase

The first phase of the Ventura Bicycle Co-op's Open Shop will take place right on the streets. This compact shop-on-wheels will be a light-weight flat-bed trailer pulled by, what else, a bicycle!

Used Bikes

Rebuilding donated bikes under the supervision of our Master Mechanic will be a way for volunteers to learn the trade. It will also be a source of affordable bicycles and parts for coop clients.

Classes

Classes offered will range from fixing a flat, to a complete bicycle rebuild. Core to our mission will also be workshops on city cycling skills taught by certified instructors. Where some people bicycle everywhere, others are afraid to take a bicycle out to the street. Training in urban cycling is critical to their transition to bicycle transit.
